Please note, the Temporary Permit is not a stand-alone license and must be submitted at the time of application. The permit is issued to those that have not taken the national exam but choose to work in the field and accrue supervision hours while preparing to take the test. The permit can only be issued one (1) time, is valid for six (6) months and cannot be renewed. If an applicant does not pass the test before the temporary permit expires, the applicant would need to cease providing counseling services and pause supervision until the exam is passed.
The West Virginia Board of Examiners in Counseling accepts the following exams for licensure: NCE, NCMHCE, CRC and MFT National Exam. If an applicant has already taken and passed a national exam, please contact NBCC or AMFTRB and request the test scores be provided to the state of West Virginia.
If you are not a formally Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, you may not reference that distinction in your credentials or advertisements. It is acceptable to promote and or advertise yourself as a Licensed Professional Counselor who provides marriage and family counseling.
Furthering the transparency in counseling services, we also wish to clarify the discussion around medication used in the scope of professional counseling. While Licensed Professional Counselors can provide guidance on the psychological aspects of disorders such as ADHD, they are not permitted to prescribe medication, like Strattera, which is often used as part of ADHD treatment plans. Strattera is typically prescribed by a psychiatrist or a pediatrician. However, a counselor can collaborate with these healthcare providers to ensure a holistic approach to mental health support for their clients.
CRC or NCMHCE exam. If you have already taken and passed the NCE exam, please request NBCC forward your scores to the Board address below.
