LPC License Renewal Requirements-2019

All LPC licenses expire 6/30/2019
  • Annual LPC License Renewal:  Effective July 1, 2017, a licensee shall renew his or her license annually on or before June 30 and is subject to the annual license renewal fee of $145.00 (Per Series 3, LPC License Renewal and Continuing Education Rules & Series 2, LPC Fees Rule.)
  • IMPORTANT NOTE:  The reporting of completed Continuing Education remains on a biennium basis and shall be submitted with the 2019 Annual LPC license renewal materials.
    • Below is a brief outline of the Continuing Education Reporting instructions:
      • ALL LPCs will be required to include a completed LPC CE Recording form that includes a list of all CE trainings completed during the 2017-2019 CE biennium period.   Click here for a list of LPC CE Focus Areas.
        • For the LPC with license # 2186 or below, and an issue date of 6/30/2015 or before, the LPC shall NOT include the CE certificates of completion. However, the board will monitor a licensee’s compliance with continuing education requirements by the use of *random audit.  See below for more information.
        • For the LPC with license #2187 or higher, and an issue date of 7/1/2015 or later, the submission of CE certificates of completion is REQUIRED with the 2019 LPC License Renewal materials.
    • Please also note, the 2017-2019 CE renewal period is the last cycle in which continuing education hours may include hours that have been carried over and completed after the LPC's designated "license renewal date".  Beginning 7/1/2019 all CE hours must be completed between 7/1/2019 through 6/30/2021 when the LPC renews their license on or before 6/30/2021, per Series 3, LPC License Renewal Rules.
  • The processing time for a renewal application is up to six (6) weeks.  If the LPC's license must be verified by an employer, insurance company or other 3rd party, on July 1, 2019, the LPC must submit their renewal application to the Board office on or before May 20, 2019.
  • Series 3, LPC License Renewal and CE rules includes the following *CE AUDIT REQUIREMENT 3.3. Beginning on the third biennium reporting period for continuing education, the board will monitor a licensee’s compliance with continuing education requirements by the use of random audit.  Licensees will be notified in writing, regular mail and/or email, if they have been selected for a continuing education audit.  Individual certificates of completion in continuing education activities are not to be submitted to the board unless a written Notice of Audit is received informing the licensee that he or she has been randomly selected for a document audit.  Upon receipt of a Notice of Audit the licensee will be required to submit all appropriate documentation to substantiate compliance with the board’s continuing education requirements within 15 working days of receipt of notice.  CE AUDIT NOTICES WILL BE SENT BY JULY 30, 2019.

LPC LICENSE RENEWAL CONTINUING EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Effective July 1, 2011, all LPC's are required to complete thirty five (35) contact hours of approved continuing education.

Please find below, a brief outline to the current LPC renewal requirements.  For more information, please review Series 3, LPC Renewal Rules, found at the Board Rules tab.

  • Effective July 1, 2017 the LPC shall complete 2 hrs. of CE related to the mental health conditions common to veterans and their families.   Approved trainings for this new requirement will include "VA APPROVED" after the title in the CE calendar found at the Approved CE tab.  The LPC may instead complete this requirement via online or homestudy CE training that is NBCC or ACA approved and meets the following criteria: Training specific to veterans and family members of veterans may include, but not be limited to, inquiring about whether clients are veterans or family members of veterans; screening for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder; readjustment issues; risk of suicide and prevention of suicide; military sexual assault; and depression and grief.
  • LPC Ethics Renewal Requirement:  All LPC's shall complete three (3) contact hours in Ethics that must include the 2014 American Counseling Association (ACA) Code of Ethics.  For the newly licensed LPC that is completing their first license renewal cycle, the ethics training must be completed in a formal setting.  Approved formal trainings are listed at the Approved CE Offerings tab.  If the LPC has completed at least one renewal cycle, this LPC can complete the 3 hours of ACA Ethics as part of the 20 hours of online/home study training.  www.counseling.org is the ACA website that offers approved online/home study ethics trainings.  If, instead, the LPC finds an online or formal ethics training that is NBCC approved but the training does not include teachings from the 2014 ACA Code of Ethics, the training CANNOT be used to fulfill the LPC Ethics renewal requirement.  Please be sure to double check that this criteria is met when choosing an LPC Ethics training.
  • ALPS Renewal Requirement: All ALPS (Approved Licensed Professional Supervisors) shall complete three (3) contact hours in clinical supervision training.  Approved formal trainings can be found at the Approved CE tab.   The three hours can also be completed as part of the 20 hours of home study.  The online/home study program must be NBCC or ACA approved and the title of the training, or training description, must include 'Clinical Supervision'.

  • NBCC & ACA Approved CE Trainings: Trainings pre-approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) and the American Counseling Association (ACA) are accepted by WVBEC.  It is the responsibility of the Licensed Professional Counselor to obtain a certificate of completion that states (on the certificate) it is approved by the NBCC or ACA.
  •  Graduate level coursework in Counseling or psychology from an accredited institution are also approved for continuing education.  Please refer to Licensing Rule, Series 1, educational requirements for a list of accepted accreditation bodies. A one (1) hour graduate class equals 15 contact hours, a two (2) hours graduate class equals 30 contact hours and a three (3) hour graduate class equals 45 contact hours.  A transcript or grade sheet will be accepted as a certificate of completion.  If presenting a graduate course please read section 4.7 of Series 3, Renewal Rules.
  • Online/Homestudy CE:  All LPC's are permitted to complete Twenty (20) of the required continuing education through NBCC or ACA preapproved online/home study coursework.  The certificate of completion must include that the training is approved by either NBCC or ACA.
  • WVLPCA & WVCA Conferences:  Both Counseling Associations in WV typically hold Spring and Fall Conferences in which they typically include LPC Ethics and ALPS trainings as well as the 2 hour VA requirement.  You may find a link to their websites at the Links/Resources tab.  Thank you.
  • CE Review for the LPC:  For all other CE trainings, that have not been pre-approved by NBCC, ACA or WVBEC, the LPC may request the board review the CE training by completing and submiting a Pre-Post CE Application.  Please be sure to include all items listed on the form.  Please allow up to 1-2 weeks to process your application.
